Welcome to Spinifex State College - Mount Isa
Our school is the largest secondary school in the north west providing a quality education to students from Mount Isa and surrounding communities.
Our vision is to provide an education that develops clever, skilled and creative Spinifex graduates. We provide a wide range of learning opportunities to ensure that we are able to support the learning needs of our diverse student population.
Our students, staff, parents and community work closely together to identify each child’s particular strengths and challenges and then to develop a learning program suited to their needs. Staff are focussed on working with students to support and challenge them to achieve to their potential.
Our school community has developed clear expectations which state:
as learners at Spinifex:
- We are safe
- We are respectful
- We are responsible.
Our school programs are delivered with a focus on individual student learning. Teachers are expected to empower students to take responsibility for their learning. Students should be able to answer the following questions for all of their learning areas:
- What are you learning?
- How are you doing?
- How do you know?
- How can you improve?
- Where can you go for help? (Questions adapted from Sharrat and Fullan, 2012)
Productive partnerships between the school, parents and the wider community are essential to provide the best possible education for our students. We expect that our community, parents, students and school staff with collaborate to provide the best quality education for our students.
The strong partnerships between the school and community – such as those with Glencore, TAFE – provide authentic learning opportunities for our students.
I can not emphasise enough the important of parent involvement and support. From ensuring that your child attends school every day prepared for learning, through to celebrating and valuing the successes at school, attending parent/teacher interviews and to involvement in our parents and citizens committee or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee. With this ongoing interest, support and encouragement we are confident that we can get the best possible outcomes for your child.
I was proud to be appointed Principal at Spinifex State College - Mount Isa, replacing Denise Kostowski, who was the school's founding principal, and I continue to be proud of the work of our staff and students.
State schools are great schools, and Spinifex State College is one of the best.
Regards,
Principal
