In 2013 the Mount Isa community celebrated its 90th birthday. While Spinifex State College – Mount Isa only opened in 2003 secondary schooling has operated as an integral part of our community for many years prior as Mount Isa State High School and Kalkadoon State High School.
Our students are very involved in community events. Each year our school students march in the community Anzac parade and attend Remembrance Day ceremonies. Students involve themselves in community events such as Naidoc Week activities and have volunteered at the annual Elders’ lunch.
Through strong and consistent leadership the school has established partnerships with local industry which opens doors to alternative learning opportunities for students. Links with Mount Isa Mines, Mount Isa Group Apprenticeship and Training Enterprise (MIGATE), TAFE North, Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA), James Cook University (JCU) have provided students with authentic, non-classroom learning opportunities.

Parent teacher interviews
At Spinifex State College - Mount Isa we value the contribution that parent play in supporting the education of their children.
To foster positive working relationships we held a number of events during the year. Twice during the year we hold formal parent-teacher interviews. This is an opportunity for parents to book an interview time with their child’s teachers to discuss students results. These interviews are held after the mid-semester one report card is distributed, and at the beginning of term 3, after semester one reports have been distributed.
At these interviews parents can discuss with teachers the student results and consider strategies to support the improvement of results for upcoming units of work.
Parents receive details of these events with report cards.
Parents are encouraged to contact the school at any time that they have concerns or are seeking support for their child.
