Vocational Education and Training (VET) plays an important role at Spinifex State College, helping students move from school to further education, training and employment. VET qualifications are recognised nationally and are industry endorsed. These courses combine relevant knowledge and practical skills that reflect current industry standards.

As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO Number: 30646), Spinifex is able to deliver a range of nationally recognised training packages at Certificate I and II levels. These courses can be studied as part of their timetable in a flexible mode.

School and TAFE Certificates and Training

Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) focuses on delivering qualifications to provide students with the skills and knowledge required for specific industries. Students can undertake VETiS as part of their school studies, delivered by a school Registered Training Organisation (RTO) such as TAFE Queensland. Alternatively, students can undertake a qualification through a School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SAT).

Study achievement in accredited Vocational Education competencies is based on industry-endorsed competency standards and is recorded on a student’s Senior Certificate. Completion of accredited training certificates contribute to QLD Certificate of Education credits. Vocational accredited certificate courses lead further training contained in traineeships and apprenticeship and/or credit on entry to higher level courses at TAFE institutions and other registered training organisations.

The VET certificate courses offered at our school are:

Students can also study the following certificates through TAFE Queensland* (RTO Number: 0275):

School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

While studying in years 10, 11 or 12 students may have an opportunity to commence a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship. The student’s timetable will be impacted by the school-based traineeship or apprenticeship. This is a requirement for the student and is organised in consultation with the school, parent, student and employer before any paperwork is signed. The student will need to be aware they are agreeing to completing specific work and training requirements, along with as well as maintaining school work requirements.

The benefits of completing a School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship include:

  • Students get paid for the one day a week placement
  • If doing a traineeship, and it gets completed before graduating, students get eight (8) credits towards their QCE
  • An apprenticeship gives the student one (1) credit per semester
  • Possibility of full-time employment when finished school
  • Students get to complete a nationally recognised Certificate III
  • Or receive credits towards a full-time apprenticeship

Work experience

As part of our school's career preparation Year 10, 11 and 12 students have the opportunity to participate in a work experience block in Term 1, 2 and 3. Work experience provides students with the opportunity to sample different areas of employment. It also aims to develop self-confidence in our students, and to assist them become better informed about workplace expectations.

We have seen quite a few success stories since starting up this program at Spinifex State College, with many students being offered part-time employment, school-based traineeships or apprenticeships and, in some cases, guaranteed full-time employment upon the completion of year 12.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

All students enrolled in a VET program must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). The USI number is issued by the federal government and without a USI students cannot be issued with their qualifications. Please refer to the USI fact sheet for more information.
